My Beacon of Hope – Kayla’s Story

My journey with Friendship House began back in November, 2023. I still remember the day I first walked through their doors, uncertain and unsure of what to expect. One of the first people I met was Ms. Shawn Helmick, who interviewed me. From the moment we sat down, her warmth and down-to-earth nature put me at ease. That was the beginning of what would become an incredible and life-changing chapter for me. From day one, the staff and other residents welcomed me with open arms. They didn’t just treat me like another person in the program, they treated me like family. Over time, they truly became my second family. Their kindness and encouragement helped me find the strength I didn’t know I had. They lifted me up when I felt low and reminded me I was not on this journey alone.

During my time in their Transitional Housing program, I started working at the Friendship House Clothing Bank. That job became such a meaningful part of my early journey. I worked there for about six months, and it not only gave me a sense of purpose, but it also helped me regain my confidence and rebuild a foundation for my future. From there, I was able to secure a job at Giant. That was such a vital moment for me—one step closer to independence and stability. I worked hard and stayed focused, and I’ve continued my journey of growth and progress ever since. Now, a year and a half later, I’ve reached new milestones I’m incredibly proud of: I recently got a new job with Christiana Care. Alongside this exciting chapter in my career, I’ve also moved into Friendship House graduate housing where I can continue to save towards a place I can afford.

When I look back at where I started, I honestly don’t know where I would be if it weren’t for Friendship House. They have given me not just a roof over my head or a job, but a home, a community, and a belief in myself I will carry with me for the rest of my life. For that, I will always be eternally grateful. To anyone who may have the opportunity to work with Friendship House, I want to say this: seize it with both hands. The staff and the community here are dedicated to helping you succeed. They see potential in you even when you might not see it in yourself. They will guide you, support you, and stand beside you as you take steps toward a brighter future. Their programs, resources, and care have changed countless lives including mine and I know they can do the same for you. Friendship House is here to help, no matter where you are in your journey. If you get the chance to be part of this amazing community, don’t hesitate. Trust in their process and allow yourself to grow. You won’t regret it.
