I am thrilled to have been appointed to sit on the Wilmington Homeless Task Force by Mayor John Carney. As his first executive order, this task force will help to steer a path forward where Wilmington, which has the largest homeless population in the state, can ensure every resident has a place to call home. I’m excited to bring a unique perspective about homelessness to the conversation based on my 10+ years of experience in this field, giving a voice to those who are often ignored.
I appreciate this opportunity is no easy task. There are as many ways to find one’s self unhoused as there are to getting out of a homeless situation. This means this task force should not think we can solve all the challenges the city faces. However, I do believe we can offer sound ideas taking into consideration all those impacted – from the people who live in Wilmington, to those seeking assistance, to the business owners and even developers.
It will be important for the task force to listen to all voices, discern how to keep dignity at the forefront, and make sure to advocate for those with the least control in decision making. Working together, I know we can find respectful and dignified ways to help achieve everyone’s goal of ensuring people have safe, accessible, and properly priced housing, while also working to make Wilmington a thriving city that attracts people and businesses.
