For many families in the Wilmington area, purchasing clothing that adheres to the school dress code is a hardship.
Working to meet their basic needs consumes all of their energy. Some of these families are on the verge of homelessness. There are few resources for school uniform items like polo shirts and khaki/navy pants, but many schools in Delaware require them. Without the required school dress code, the consequences for students can be significant. Any help that we can offer to ease this one burden for these students and families will make a huge difference and provides students with the confidence needed to excel in academics.
For the upcoming school year, we want to provide uniforms for 2,000 students in 5 target schools in Red Clay Consolidated School District.
Each student will receive 2 uniform sets and 1 extra polo shirt. In the fall of 2020, we piloted this program by providing 400 uniform items to an elementary school in Wilmington. We’ve seen the outcome from that endeavor, and we know that this initiative will have a significant impact. Our plan is to expand our reach incrementally until we are eventually serving the entire state.
Our initiative contains many elements and several strategies.
Our uniform initiative relies heavily on community participation and support, and we are always looking for collaborators. We are seeking donations of new uniform items, as well as financial contributions which will allow us to purchase the uniforms needed. A $50 donation supports one student. Additionally, we know that there are many outgrown school uniforms that still have a lot of life left in them, and we are working hard to capture them and redistribute them to other students.
WHAT WE NEED:
New or gently-used uniform items in children sizes 3T – 20
- Pants & Shorts: khaki & navy
- Polo shirts and cardigans: white, navy & light blue
